Alright guys, this is my Philadelphia Flyers franchise I've been playing on NHL 2k7. I have a season story thread at 2khockey.net that I've been updating with little updates since NHL 2k6. It can be located here. The thread is a little old, as it was created almost 3 years ago. Go to the last page if you want to see the current information. Now I'm in the playoffs in the 2009-2010 season and I wanted to bring the thread here. So I'm going to be tracking the franchise here and there. Hope you enjoy it guys.
Updates are en route!

Let's give some season background: The Flyers are 2 time defending Cup Champions (I lost in the quarterfinals in my first year). Geoff Sanderson broke the single season scoring record with 97 goals in my 2nd year. Peter Forsberg, who was having his best year yet in a Flyers uniform, broke his wrist at the end of the season and will be out for the playoff run. My roster is as follows:
LW-C-RW 1st: Timofei Shiskanov - Jeff Carter - Geoff Sanderson 2nd: Brad Richardson - Marty Murray - Stephen Weiss 3rd: Aleksander Suglobov - Mark Cullen - Sami Kapanen 4th: Fedor Fedorov - RJ Umberger - Ryan Potulny
D-D 1st: Derek Morris - Freddy Meyer 2nd: Brad Fast - Kirill Koltsov 3rd: Mike Green - Steve McCarthy
G Robert Esche Jamie Storr
Injuries: C Peter Forsberg, LW Simon Gagne, RW Richard Park
EAST [1] PHI [8] CAR -- [2] BUF [7] MTL -- [3] WSH [6] ATL -- [4] TOR [5] OTT
WEST [1] ANA [8] DET -- [2] NSH [7] CHI -- [3] CGY [6] COL -- [4] SJ [5] MIN
So there you have it. The Cup Playoffs are starting. Both finalists from last year are in (SJ and PHI). PHI, WSH, TOR, OTT, and MTL are back in from last year. CHI, CGY, MIN, SJ, NSH, and ANA are back in from last year in the West. Let's get it going!
Game 1 is in the books. Carolina stuns Philadelphia with a Game 1 win in Philly.
Stephen Weiss kicked off the scoring for the Flyers with a sweet deflection through the 5 hole of 'Canes goalie Cam Ward. However, Carolina answered with a pair of goals 2 minutes and 5 seconds apart to head into the dressing room with a 2-1 edge.
Carolina padded the lead midway through the second with a Saku Koivu goal. But Mark Cullen of the Flyers wristed one by Ward on the powerplay to bring the Flyers to within one.
The Flyers couldn't complete the comeback though, as Brian Gionta's 1st goal of the playoffs put the Canes up by 2 and it was a deficit the Flyers couldn't erase. Koivu potted his second of the night on an empty netter with 9 seconds left to give the Hurricanes a 5-2 win.
EAST [1] PHI - 0 [8] CAR - 1 -- [2] BUF - 0 [7] MTL - 1 -- [3] WSH - 1 [6] ATL - 0 -- [4] TOR - 0 [5] OTT - 1
WEST [1] ANA - 0 [8] DET - 1 -- [2] NSH - 0 [7] CHI - 1 -- [3] CGY - 0 [6] COL - 1 -- [4] SJ - 0 [5] MIN - 1
Game 2 is over. The Flyers are back on track with a 6-3 win.
Philadelphia got started early with two goals by Timofei Shiskanov, his first two of the postseason and of his career. The 26 year old former Nashville Predator played in 49 games and scored 6 goals for the Flyers this year. Impressed with his effort as a 4th liner, he made his way up the depth chart and eventually landed on the first line with all the injuries. Even with Simon Gagne back, Shiskanov stuck with Jeff Carter and Geoff Sanderson on the first line.
The Canes got one back with a Rhett Warrener goal that handcuffed Robert Esche, but Geoff Sanderson scored a pair of his own within 30 seconds of each other to put the Flyers up 4-1 after just one period.
Carolina cut the lead in half in the second period with a Brian Gionta goal, his second of the series.
Philadelphia closed the deal in the third period with 2 more goals, one each by Carter and RJ Umberger. The Hurricanes' Ryan Whitney scored to finish out the scoring in the game. The Flyers win 6-3.
EAST [1] PHI - 1 [8] CAR - 1 -- [2] BUF - 0 [7] MTL - 2 -- [3] WSH - 2 [6] ATL - 0 -- [4] TOR - 1 [5] OTT - 1
WEST [1] ANA - 1 [8] DET - 1 -- [2] NSH - 1 [7] CHI - 1 -- [3] CGY - 1 [6] COL - 1 -- [4] SJ - 0 [5] MIN - 2
Game 3 is history. The Hurricanes score late to win 2-1.
This time around, it was Carolina who got the first tally. Darcy Tucker's 2nd of the postseason put the Canes out in front 9:17 into the game. However, Jeff Carter's 2nd goal of the playoffs tied things back up late in the 1st.
The two squads went through the 2nd and most of the 3rd without a goal.
However, Radovan Somik broke the stalemate with his 1st goal against his former team. Somik's score with less then 3 minutes remaining in the game proved to be the difference maker as the Canes held on for a 2-1 victory.
EAST [1] PHI - 1 [8] CAR - 2 -- [2] BUF - 1 [7] MTL - 2 -- [3] WSH - 3 [6] ATL - 0 -- [4] TOR - 2 [5] OTT - 1
WEST [1] ANA - 2 [8] DET - 1 -- [2] NSH - 2 [7] CHI - 1 -- [3] CGY - 1 [6] COL - 2 -- [4] SJ - 1 [5] MIN - 2
Game 4 is complete. The Flyers edge the Canes 2-1 in overtime.
Philadelphia looked to get off to a hot start facing a 2-1 series deficit and did as Mike Green scored his first goal of the postseason on the powerplay less then 5 minutes into the game.
But as has been the story of the series, the other team came back quickly. With a delayed call on the Flyers, Konstantin Pushkarev scored his first of the playoffs to tie things up.
The two teams played to a stalemate through the next two periods.
Enter overtime. The Flyers, facing the heat of a possible 3-1 deficit, ripped 5 shots at Canes goalie Cam Ward. On the 32nd and final shot of the night, Stephen Weiss whizzed one right by the Carolina goalie's blocker to send the series back to Philadelphia knotted up at 2 games apiece.
EAST [1] PHI - 2 [8] CAR - 2 -- [2] BUF - 1 [7] MTL - 3 -- [3] WSH - 3 [6] ATL - 1 -- [4] TOR - 3 [5] OTT - 1
WEST [1] ANA - 3 [8] DET - 1 -- [2] NSH - 2 [7] CHI - 2 -- [3] CGY - 2 [6] COL - 2 -- [4] SJ - 1 [5] MIN - 3
Game 5 is all over. The Hurricanes are one step from eliminating the Flyers with a 3-1 victory.
The two clubs played through half a game of hockey before the first goal was scored. Radovan Somik struck for the 2nd time this series with a goal at the 16:08 mark. Marcel Goc padded the lead with his 1st of the postseason with under a minute left to go in the period.
However, Geoff Sanderson netted his 3rd of the playoffs, a beautiful combination of skate-to-stick coordination that cut the Canes lead in half. Unfortunately, Mattias Weinhandl's 1st of the series extinguished the threat and capped the scoring for the night.
The Flyers now have their backs to the wall in Game 6 and will try to stave off elimination in what has been a back to back series. The Hurricanes look to finish off the Flyers at home in the RBC Center.
EAST [1] PHI - 2 [8] CAR - 3 -- [2] BUF - 2 [7] MTL - 3 -- [3] WSH - 3 [6] ATL - 2 -- [4] TOR - 4 [5] OTT - 1
WEST [1] ANA - 3 [8] DET - 2 -- [2] NSH - 3 [7] CHI - 2 -- [3] CGY - 2 [6] COL - 3 -- [4] SJ - 2 [5] MIN - 3
Game 6 is finished. The Carolina Hurricanes complete the upset of the Philadelphia Flyers with a 4-3 win.
The two teams traded blows in the 1st period and came out of the session tied up at 2 apiece with goals from Darcy Tucker and Marcel Goc for Carolina and from Sami Kapanen and Geoff Sanderson from Philadelphia.
The rest of the damage was done in the 2nd period. The trio of Saku Koivu, Brian Gionta, and Darcy Tucker could not be stopped as Koivu had 2 goals in the period and the line combined for 7 points. Mark Cullen tallied for the Flyers.
The Canes buckled down and seemed to get just enough of a bump on a player to knock him off course or just enough of their stick on a shot to alter its course away from the net.
So now, the Carolina Hurricanes, who snuck into the playoffs on the last day of the season, the team who had 21 less wins and 37 less points, has upset the mighty Flyers and put an end to their quest for a three-peat.
EAST [1] PHI - 2 [8] CAR - 4 -- [2] BUF - 3 [7] MTL - 3 -- [3] WSH - 3 [6] ATL - 3 -- [4] TOR - 4 [5] OTT - 1
WEST [1] ANA - 3 [8] DET - 3 -- [2] NSH - 3 [7] CHI - 3 -- [3] CGY - 3 [6] COL - 3 -- [4] SJ - 3 [5] MIN - 3
EAST [1] PHI - 2 [8] CAR - 4 -- [2] BUF - 4 [7] MTL - 3 -- [3] WSH - 4 [6] ATL - 3 -- [4] TOR - 4 [5] OTT - 1
WEST [1] ANA - 4 [8] DET - 3 -- [2] NSH - 3 [7] CHI - 4 -- [3] CGY - 4 [6] COL - 3 -- [4] SJ - 4 [5] MIN - 3
Only two of the 8 series went less then 7 games, quite a rarity even with all the parity in the NHL nowadays. The San Jose Sharks continue their quest to make it back to a Cup Final. Meanwhile, in the East, the Washington Capitals almost coughed up a 3-0 lead before finally winning the series in Game 7. Here are the Conference Semifinals matchups and results.
EAST [2] BUF - 4 [8] CAR - 1 -- [3] WSH - 2 [4] TOR - 4
WEST [1] ANA - 4 [7] CHI - 3 -- [3] CGY - 4 [4] SJ - 3
So an all Northeast Eastern Conference Finals with the #2 Buffalo Sabres taking on the #4 Toronto Maple Leafs. Meanwhile, in the West, the San Jose Sharks coughed up a 3-1 series lead to lose in 7 games to the Calgary Flames. The Anaheim Ducks traded blows with the Chicago Blackhawks and eventually won in 7 games as well. Now the Ducks will look to keep Calgary from their 3rd Finals appearance since '03-'04 (they lost in '06-'07 to the Florida Panthers in 6 games). Here are the results from the Conference Finals.
EAST [2] BUF - 4 [4] TOR - 2
WEST [1] ANA - 4 [3] CGY - 1
Now the Buffalo Sabres look to finally win something for their city while the Anaheim Ducks will play to win their first Stanley Cup. Here's what happened.
STANLEY CUP FINALS [1] ANA - 4 [2] BUF - 3
And the Ducks are the Stanley Cup Champions! The #1 seed in the West jumped out to a 2-0 series edge, but the Sabres stole both games at home and tied things up at 2 apiece. Anaheim won the next one before Buffalo forced a Game 7 with a win. But in the deciding game the Ducks came out on top and won their first championship.
A new season has come upon us. The Flyers were very quiet in the offseason. Gone from last year's roster are Fedor Fedorov (12 G, 14 A), Marty Murray (20 G, 20 A), and Brad Fast. The only addition to the Flyers lineup is familar to the team; Jeremy Roenick returns for another stop in Philadelphia at 41 years of age. After leaving Philly after '03-'04, Roenick signed with the Los Angeles Kings, where spent a year. JR then went back to Phoenix for 3 years but sat out last year. Despite having over 500 goals and 700+ assists for 1200+ points, the former Chicago star has not yet hoisted Lord Stanley's Cup. He looks to do so this year in the Orange & Black.
Line combinations for the 2010-2011 year are as follows:
LW-C-RW 1st: Simon Gagne (A) - Peter Forsberg (C) - Geoff Sanderson 2nd: Timofei Shishkanov - Jeff Carter - Stephen Weiss 3rd: Aleksander Suglobov - Jeremy Roenick - Sami Kapanen (A) 4th: Richard Park - RJ Umberger - Espen Myrvold
D-D 1st: Derek Morris - Freddy Meyer (A) 2nd: Paul Ranger - Kirill Koltsov 3rd: Mike Green - Steve McCarthy
G Robert Esche Jamie Storr
The Flyers kicked off the 2010-2011 campaign with a divisional win against the New York Rangers. Kapanen, Shishkanov, and Suglobov scored for Philadelphia in the 3-1 win. The Flyers dropped their first game of the season against the Columbus Blue Jackets two nights later, falling 2-1 with Sanderson tallying the only goal for Philadelphia.
The Flyers turned around and made two huge trades. Philly acquires goalie Kari Lehtonen, right wing Andrei Kostitsyn, a 2nd and 3rd round pick from Toronto in exchange for right wing Espen Myrvold and a 2nd round pick. Immediately afterwards, the Flyers dealt goalie Robert Esche, defensemen Mike Green, and a 5th round pick to Los Angeles for defensemen Dieter Ehrhoff and goalie Roman Turek.
The moves shake up the Flyers roster dramatically. We'll analyze the trade with Toronto first.
What the Flyers are getting is a stud goalie who is just entering his prime. Kari Lehtonen has been in the league since '03-'04, when he broke in with the Atlanta Thrashers. Lehtonen was traded midway through the '07-'08 season to the Phoenix Coyotes, where he played out the rest of the season and was on board with the organization for the year. That offseason he defected to the Maple Leafs, where he spent all of last year. However, the 27 year old Fin was not experiencing much success as far as wins go. He is just 137-151 in his career, but much can be attributed to the teams he's been on.
Andrei Kostitsyn is a blazer with a sniper mentality who has not yet realized his potential as he has just 22 goals and 11 assists in 228 games. He broke into the league in '05-'06 with Montreal, was in Pittsburgh for a year, and was with Toronto all of last year. He will now get a fresh start in Philadelphia.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are getting a player who will be a star but was held down by the likes of Simon Gagne and Stephen Weiss on the Flyers who had already established their positions on the team. Espen Myrvold was one of the highest rated players coming out in '08-'09, when he appeared in 36 games for the Flyers. He scored 8 goals and 4 assists that year. That postseason he put up 5 goals and 2 assists and won a Stanley Cup with Philly. Last year, however, he appeared in only 21 games and scored only 1 goal and had 5 assists. With less talent on the Maple Leafs team, Myrvold will likely shine with a chance to play on a top line.
And now the trade with the Los Angeles Kings.
This trade was made out of necessity because Philly needed to make sure that Kari Lehtonen had the starting goalie spot locked down with his arrival. Robert Esche was the odd man out and the Kings have a couple older, average goalies on their roster. Esche, who backstopped the Flyers to two straight Stanley Cups and three straight 40+ win seasons, will be an excellent addition to a pretty bad Kings team. However, many attribute his success to the team he had around him on the Flyers. Philadelphia gets a 40 year old Roman Turek, who is well past his prime and likely in his last year of NHL service, in exchange.
And who would think that trading a 3 time 40 game winner wouldn't be the big part of the trade? The Flyers are getting Dieter Ehrhoff, a puck moving giant who looks to be in the mold of a Zdeno Chara. He broke in with Vancouver, but bounced from the Canucks to the Florida Panthers to the Kings a year ago. He'll now join his 4th team in 4 years where he hopes to stick. Meanwhile, the Kings get Mike Green, a super talented defensemen who has spent the last 3 years with the Flyers. However, he was plagued by injury problems, missing 42 games over the past 3 seasons. He is just 25 years old and if he gets by his injury problems, he should blossom.
The Flyers gave up a lot of young talent and established veterans in order to improve their team. We will see if their plan is successful or if it blows up in their face.
Wow dude, props on getting this far in a dynasty. Finishing five seasons is something to be proud of. I barely get through three on Madden, and that is a lot less games. Anyways, I read all the mini-updates and you got me hooked on reading about the Flyers.

Thanks for the kind words Nitro.
I'm definitely very proud of my progress so far on this game. This is what happens when you just stick to one game and not buy into the hype of the "new and improved" 200X game that's coming out. I have NFL 2k5, Madden 06, NHL 2k7, and MVP 2005 and I'm sticking with them until they don't work anymore.
Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying the updates on here. It seems a little odd to be using a forum to update on a dynasty tracker website, but these are my roots. I've been tracking my seasons online on forums since 2003 (maybe even 2002) and since I'm not too big into the pages anymore, I figured I'd get back into it (though I never left as I've consistently updated my 2khockey.net thread) in some way.
So stay tuned. I've been churning out games left and right so naturally there should be a pretty steady supply of updates.
Looks like the Flyers have the early edge after their two big time trades went down the other day.
The Flyers blanked the New York Islanders 4-0 with two goals coming from Stephen Weiss, one from Aleksander Suglobov, and one from newcomer Andrei Kostitsyn. Kari Lehtonen turned away all 16 shots he saw to record his first win and shutout in his first game as a Flyer.
Just a note to any of those guys reading this thread. Updates come randomly. Sometimes a days, weeks, or a month apart. But when I get the itch, I update like a damn madman. So there's no set schedule. I just update as I go. But it WILL be updated. I can guarantee that.
3-1 W v. ATL 3-0 W v. PIT 5-4 L/SO @ NJ 6-2 W v. CHI
Notes: Peter Forsberg went out in the shutout win against Pittsburgh and will miss 2-4 weeks with an arm injury. Mark Cullen will replace him in the lineup.
Line combinations are as follows:
LW-C-RW 1st: Timofei Shishkanov - Jeff Carter (A) - Geoff Sanderson 2nd: Simon Gagne (A) - Stephen Weiss - Aleksander Suglobov 3rd: Sami Kapanen (C) - Jeremy Roenick - Andrei Kostitsyn 4th: Richard Park - RJ Umberger - Mark Cullen
D-D 1st: Derek Morris - Freddy Meyer (A) 2nd: Paul Ranger - Kirill Koltsov 3rd: Dieter Ehrhoff - Steve McCarthy
G Kari Lehtonen Ramzi Medvedev
And the statistics report through the month of October.
Jeremy Roenick: 3 G, 3 A, 6 pts
Dieter Ehrhoff: 1 G, 4 A, 5 pts
Stephen Weiss: 3 G, 1 A, 4 pts
Freddy Meyer: 2 G, 2 A, 4 pts
Simon Gagne: 2 G, 2 A, 4 pts
Timofei Shishkanov: 1 G, 3 A, 4 pts
Kirill Koltsov: 0 G, 4 A, 4 pts
Geoff Sanderson: 4 G, 0 A, 4 pts
Jeff Carter: 1 G, 2 A, 3 pts
Aleksander Suglobov: 3 G, 0 A, 3 pts
Mark Cullen: 1 G, 1 A, 2 pts (2 games played)
Peter Forsberg: 2 G, 0 A, 2 pts (5 games played)
Andrei Kostitsyn: 1 G, 0 A, 1 pt (5 games played)
Sami Kapanen: 1 G, 0 A, 1 pt
Steve McCarthy: 0 G, 0 A, 0 pts
RJ Umberger: 0 G, 0 A, 0 pts
Derek Morris: 0 G, 0 A, 0 pts
Paul Ranger: 0 G, 0 A, 0 pts
Richard Park: 0 G, 0 A, 0 pts
Kari Lehtonen: 5-1, 2 SO, .924 SV%, 1.48 GAA
Ramzi Medvedev: 0-0, 0 SO, .000 SV%, 0.00 GAA
The story so far has been Jeremy Roenick's rebirth in the Orange & Black. The 41 year old leads the team with 6 points, posting 3 goals and 3 assists as the third line center. He is complimented very well by linemates Sami Kapanen and Andrei Kostitsyn, who make up for JR's lack of speed with afterburners of their own. Meanwhile, Kari Lehtonen has been all he was cracked up to be when he came to Philly after 2 games, posting a 4-0-1 record with the club. He allowed only 1 goal in his first three starts before giving up 5 in a shootout loss to New Jersey. Dieter Ehrhoff, another trade acquisition, is second on the team with 5 points, putting up 3 points (0 G, 3 A) in his 5 games played with the Flyers. He had a goal and an assist in his previous 2 games with the LA Kings. Also, Stephen Weiss and Geoff Sanderson lead the charge in the goal scoring category, as they have 3 and 4 goals respectively.
Now the Flyers get into the meat of their schedule, as they open up November with a home date with Pittsburgh. Rookie Ramzi Medvedev will get his first start of the year in goal.
Flyers are 5-1-1 with 11 points and sit in 1st in the Eastern Conference and 1st in the Atlantic Division.
What an offensive explosion! The Flyers have now outscored their opponents 21-5 in just 3 games in November.
It started against Pittsburgh, when rookie Ramzi Medvedev got his first NHL win as a goalie as the Flyers cruised to a 5-1 victory. 4 days later, in New York City, the Flyers embarassed the Rangers 10-1. Simon Gagne, Aleksander Suglobov, and Jeremy Roenick each had multi-goal games. Then the Flyers visited Dallas to kick off a 3 game western swing and beat down on the Stars 6-3.
Philly looks to continue their offensive success as they finish out the western trip with stops in Phoenix and San Jose.
Well, aren't you DM'ers the lucky ones today? Due to the 2khockey.net boards being down, you guys get the update while the thread that has been around since 2005 is under construction. Ehh, this is more my home anyway!
Here are some results from recent games, with many more to be played due to everyone celebrating Easter while I'm at home with nothing to do (because I celebrated it 2 days ago):
5-2 W @ PHO 5-2 L @ SJ 2-1 W/SO v. FLA 5-1 W v. MTL 5-2 W @ ATL 7-3 W v. NYR
Despite missing Peter Forsberg (and later Timofei Shishkanov), the Flyers continue to roll. Recent injuries to Jeremy Roenick and Derek Morris haven't dampened the spirits either, with Ryan Potulny and David Tanabe stepping right in and becoming productive players.
With three games left in November, the Flyers are 13-2-1 with 27 points and sit in 2nd in the East, 1st in the Atlantic. Simon Gagne has led the charge for Philly, posting 8 goals and 7 assists for 15 points. Geoff Sanderson has posted an identical line. Aleksander Suglobov continues to progress since coming to Philadelphia 2 years ago, as he has 7 goals and 6 assists for 13 points while Stephen Weiss has stepped up his game and has 8 goals and 4 assists. Meanwhile, on the defensive side, Freddy Meyer looks to build upon his 50 assist season of a year ago and has 3 goals (matching the amount he had all of last year) and 8 assists for 11 points. Kari Lehtonen is playing just like the Flyers hoped he would when they acquired him earlier this year and has put up a 12-2 record with 2 shutouts and a .908 save percentage.
The Flyers visit the Boston Bruins, host the New York Islanders, then head to NYC for an away date with the Rangers to finish out the month.
